Pippin on Horseshoe Beach
We ended up going in to the RSPCA to help with some rehab work on an Apricot Standard Poodle they have in. He's a lovely dog but scared of most everything right now. He's not as bad as Pip was but we sat with him and his little friend (a silver toy poodle) and took him out of the cage for a while.

Today we went in again and took Pip with us. Wasn't worth taking Dougall because he's too dominant.
Pip seemed to have fun. They got on alright. Pip wouldn't play as much as Trevor wanted to but didn't seem to mind when Trevor was climbing in our laps.

I have some pictures of Trevor (standard poodle) and Cupcake (toy poodle *rolls eyes*) to post

Things got too hectic and I missed this.
April 1st was Angel's birthday and as it was the day we picked Pippin up from the shelter to come and live with us it's now counted as his birthday too.
Happy Birthday Angel

I miss you sweetheart. You were a pain in the arse at times and you cost us a fortune in vet bills but I don't regret saving you.
We gave her over 5 years of beach walks and plays and good food. She got to sleep on the couch and always had a ball with mum's dogs. She'd get all excited when we said we were going to visit Kara and Darcie. She loved wearing her jacket and would wear a bandana or a hat if you told her she was pretty. *g*
I hope you're having fun with Kara love.
*sniff*

And wow, it's been a year since we picked up Pippin. We were really upset about Bella being sold the day before we got there. But I think it all worked out for the best. Pip's behavior problems would have meant that they would have struggled to re-home him.
He is such a different dog now. It's heartwarming to see how far he's come. He's so eager to please us and he's so happy here with us and Dougall and O'Riely. Shame he and Scarlett don't get on.
We still have some problems with him. He has a lot of Aspie behaviours so we know how to deal with those. He's a part of our family. He owns my heart.
Now if only he and Dougall would stop waking me up at night.

Happy Birthday Pippin
Just a warning. This cut hides some really early pictures of Pippin with his matted fur and skinny frame. They may be upsetting to some. It has a wonderfully happy ending though.

We're all so happy he's here.

Pip seems really happy of late. We've not really been getting them out at all but he's coping well. He plays with stuff and chases flys and goes for runs around the backyard. He spends a lot of time watching interestedly out the front or back door. Dougall spends most of his day sleeping. We're going to have to do something with him. He'll get fat so quick. He sleeps a lot and put weight on quick. We try and get him to wake and do stuff but he's not up long before he's back asleep. Then he wakes me up when I sleep.
But yeah Pip keeps coming up and saying hello and wanting a pat and making eye contact. He's doing really well with the interaction thing. It's been just over a year now since he came into the RSPCA. April 1st we'll have had him a year. We should have a party. Doesn't seem like that long and yet it seems like forever.

I asked Alisso to tape the RSPCA rescue show for me and we watched that. It was a hell of a lot less bad than I feared. We weren't on it for very long at all which was good and though it was heart breaking to see I'm glad we did.

If you're in Australia you can watch the show online here. You see Pip come in about 8 mins or so. He's the brown skinny thing yowling in terror as they try and shave him. He was called Pepe then. We'll get a copy of the show and edit it down to just the story about the mass surrender where Pip came from and put it up for people to see.

Vets went fine this morning.
We didn't get enough sleep but managed to get out and there mostly on time.
Mum picked us up and added Pip to her account there and then took off to find out how certain dogs were going. *g* She worked yesterday and today was her first day of a three week holiday.

Pip wasn't happy in the room with the vet he was a bit shakey and his tail was right between his legs but he did well. Didn't even flinch with the needle. Was happy to get out of there though.
He's 21.8kg. Not bad. We think he's settled into his proper weight now. We were originally aiming for 25kgish but he's got muscle tone now and you can't see all his ribs sticking out any more so he's a good weight. He was 17kg when he came in and had to be taught how to eat a tiny bit at a time. He was 19.5 when we got him. He's so much healthier now though.
I think he'll always have problems on and off with his ears, they're so hairy and they are long so he'll always be prone to yeast infections and stuff. He's been going okay with that too though.
And I think when he's older he'll have trouble with his back hips at least. He didn't get what he needed as he was growing so his joints are a bit dodgy.

Dougall how ever is getting fat *g* We noticed when we shaved him that he was bigger than we thought and have cut his dinner down by about half.
I've never had a little dog but when we got him he was about 5kg and that's what Mister weighs. So I figured I'd feed him the same amount as the cats, who despite being middle aged and lazy, aren't over weight.

Dougall has been funny with food since we got him and he wouldn't eat out of a bowl for the first few weeks. So when he was taking forever to eat his dinner and not always eating it I just thought he was being funny again.
But yeah, now I've cut it back he's eating it pretty close to the time I put it down for him and he's finishing it off so it must be a better amount for him.
He's 6.1kg now. Whoops.
Mind you the past few weeks he's really slowed down and he's just been laying about and sleeping. I'm keeping an eye on him but I think it's just the heat.

Hopefully it will start to get back to less insane temperatures again now and we can get them out for plenty of walks. Shouldn't be too hard to get him back to about 5kg.

On the way home from the vets we stopped at a cafe in Lovedale.
Mum had driven past it before and wanted to stop. It was a nice little place. They have Llamas and tiny horses and you could have dogs at the outside tables.
We had a nice coffee and chat to the woman who owns the place and then headed to mums.

We got to see the baby rats which aren't really babies any more. About a week away from being taken from mum. They are still getting milk but also eating solid food and drinking water.
I didn't have my camera so I was using mums but OMG sooo slow! I really don't think I could deal with a cheap point and shoot digital any more. They're too frustrating.

In other news we're heading to the RSPCA tomorrow morning to get Pip his C5 vaccination so that we can board him when we need to.
And then we're coming home to sleep probably.
We decided that neither of us were well enough to go to Hill End.
It's just been too much of late. Too much stress and too much travelling.
We're going to spend this weekend doing not much. I'll be drawing my Bigbang stuff and getting that jewellery online.

We have Top Gear Live next weekend and Mardi Gras later in the month.

Yep 7:30 next Wed 10th on 7/Prime RSPCA Rescue will have Pip, Dougall and us on it I'm guessing. I mean I know Pip is there. He's called Pepe at the beginning. But I don't know how much of our stuff they'll show.
I'm really not looking forward to seeing me at all. But I do want to see Pip when he came in. We dealt more with Angel when she came in and then Luie after but we did get a glimpse of Pip.

Anyway http://au.tv.yahoo.com/plus7/rspca-animal-rescue/ seems to have episodes up for a week after they air so people should be able to see it there. I don't know if it works overseas.

So the other week we got Pippin shaved and today Ruth shaved Dougall. He wasn't coping with the heat. I didn't know what he would look like but he looks like an adorable puppy.
Well we've just ticked over to full speed again so it's picspam time. I don't have access to the before photos because of not having my TARDIS.

puppies with their summer coats (caution the photos are very big) )
It's so cute. The boys have spent the day alternately playing like mad and crashing out. They've played more today than in the past month I think. Poor things were hot.
I've spent most of the day sewing up a pink knitted pterodactyl.

We just decided that 3 1/2 hours sleep wasn't enough and they weren't coming so fuck it, we'd go to bed.

Guess who just rang.

They're on their way back to Newcastle and would we be around at about 2pm.

I am now eating cheese on corn thins and tomato cup-a-soup.

Ahhh you have to laugh right?

So last night we pushed ourselves and got the place as clean as it gets.
We ended up giving up and going to bed at about 2:30am and then, umm, got distracted till 4:15. *headdesk*

This morning we got up at 7:30am and finished off the cleaning, put out all the rubbish and Ruth vacuumed the lounge room.

It's now 9:30 and we've been sitting here stressing.

We just got a phone call from David. They're still in Taree and wont be making it down today.
*dies*
Next Tuesday or Wednesday is the expected date right now. They'll have to find out when the bit for the horse story they're doing can be filmed and then slot us in before or after that.

I just want it to be over right now *g*
not sure I'll even be able to go back to bed right now with my anxiety this high.
Ah well.

Guess I better get some work done.

And that means doggy pic spam.
I'll start photographing other things soon once I can get out of the house and all but for now you get pics of the boys and Ruth too.

While we were picking up our meds I got a phone call from David the RSPCA Rescue bloke saying they will be in town tomorrow and Friday morning so they'll be heading round to film us and Pip in his home.

Not really great timing as we've both been very sick and haven't really recovered from Ruth's brother's wedding.

The dogs have been brushed. I'll get pictures later.

Pippin on Horseshoe Beach
Mum came around this afternoon after work to pick up bottle for the dogs and bring me a gluten free cook book she'd bought through her work's book club. It's not bad actually. It has many recipes that sound good. They're all made with only 4 ingredients too so hopefully they'll be easy to cook.

Once mum left we took the dogs over the road for a run. They were very good and although you could see Dougall wanted to run out side the oval to piss on all the trees he came back when we called him. *squishes him*
He's also finally learned how to eat out of a bowl \o/
He's not a huge eater. He takes his time and likes to look around and wander off while eating but we also found he wouldn't go near food in a bowl. We tried a plate but he still wouldn't eat it. We tried different materials but he'd still only eat off the floor or from our hands.
I wasn't going to hand feed him all the time so we've been mixing mince in with the food (which we do when we can afford it anyway) and feeding him by hand but getting closer and closer to the bowl (he wouldn't even step up to the bowl when we started) and then with our hands in the bowl etc and for the past two nights he's eaten out of the bowl by himself without us having to hand feed him at all. Woot!

Speaking of Dougall...

How adorable is he? How on earth could you mistreat him?? *kicks people*

Now, because I can, more puppy picspam! I've got a few up from the other day and also yesterday when mum brought her dogs to meet Dougall.

I have some photos from today and last night of the dogs on the oval that I need to edit and put up and I have some that I took before my camera broke that I didn't have time to edit because of wedding photos and commissions that I'll get around to eventually.

I also finally got access to the photos we've taken on the phone camera these past few months so I've put the best of them up at flickr.

You can go to the phone camera set at flickr to see pictures of the dogs including Pippin's floofy self after he got groomed, Dougall having a bath and a Blue Tongue Skink Ruth rescued from next door.

Dougall and Pippin
The boys are great friends now. Pippin has problems with anxiety due to his neglect background.
He's really bonded with Dougall and has improved a lot. Because of this we're probably going to end up buying Dougall.

One of Pip's problems is that when he's laying down and feeling vulnerable he will growl at any other dog that comes near him. He's getting a lot better with that. Sometimes he will still do that with Dougall and other times they'll lay quite happily together. Dougall takes it all in his stride and will just move away if Pip gets cranky.

Don't I look pretty?
Pippin on the way home from being groomed for the first time.
It was getting way too warm for Pip's winter coat. It had grown in so thick and lovely that it was almost a shame to cut it. He's much happier with the heat now though and we hardly have to brush him any more *g*

His coat mats really easily and it was so thick that it took a long time each day to keep it maintained. He's not too bad about being brushed. Much easier to get him to sit still than it ever was with Angel but he'll only take it for a while before you have to give him a break.

We took him to Dog Overboard in Adamstown and they did a pretty good job considering we had to leave him and his separation anxiety is so bad.. He usually pitches a fit as soon as he can't see us.
He also hates having anything done to his face. Clippers, scissors, anything. So his muzzle was a little uneven but it's grown in fine now.

We asked for the same length all over except the face and the feet short so we could keep him clean but we ended up with the boofy head and ears and a very floofy tail. *g*

Oh and that purple spot in his hair is a flower rosette hair tie they put in. It matched his collar *g* We kept laughing at it all night and most of the next day. I was expecting him to take it out right away but he didn't touch it. We took it out before we went to the Doggy Day Out.

Curled up together

Ugh. Every time it's time to go to bed the dogs start playing.
Pippin running. Ruth in the background
Things have been going well with Dougall here. He spent last night in the bathroom and only scratched at the door once that I knew of and he stopped it when I yelled out.
He loved settling down in his big squishy bed. It was a little chilly in the bathroom but nowhere near as cold as outside or in the shelter so it's better than he's had in a long while.

He's a very happy dog. He seems to be picking up a fair bit of stuff. He was getting a bit funny with the cat, growling a few times and chasing him if he ran, but seems to be settling down a bit now. He's getting the hang of sitting on command and when he wants a pat too.

Pip has been his usual slightly grumpy self. He gets a little jealous. Probably worried he's going to lose the good stuff he only recently got.
He doesn't like another dog being too near him or touching him when he's laying down. I'm assuming he got picked on before the dogs were seized. Of the three Standard Poodles that we saw, he was the least dominant.

He's not been too bad about it and has been playing with Dougall a fair bit today. They're funny to watch. Pip is all flailing paws and Dougall is just flying hair.
I think we have a video of them playing. I'll have to check it out tomorrow though.

Today we went to pick up a new collar for Dougall as the one we got him with was too big and we didn't want him slipping out of it.
Then we went for a walk through Maitland Mall and then back along the river.
It was a lovely day for it. Unfortunately there weren't many people there so it didn't help much with socialisation but it was a nice walk.

We'll probably head out to the Doggy Fun Day latter this month. That will be lots of people and other dogs so it should be good.

There's one in the Hunter Valley in October (Doggy Day Out) that we hope to get too as well.

Awww lookit them.

Today we picked up Dougall. He's staying with us for a couple of weeks to try and give him some training.
He's been at the shelter a few weeks and has become a bit barrier aggressive. He will bark and snarl at people on the other side of his cage door but once out he's a lovely, friendly dog.

He's a beautiful little boy. I don't usually like little dogs as much but he's got a great personality. He's not noisy or neurotic, he's getting on well with Pip and Ruth's brushing mats out of the back of his neck right now and he's just laying there and letting her do it. He has a beautiful coat.

He's adorable. We can't afford him but I hope we can find him a home.
Though I think if we can stop the barrier aggression he'll find a home really quick. He'd had a few people interested in him and wanting to buy him till they walked past him in the cage and he went off.

But yes, he's here for about two weeks I'd say and we'll see how he goes. I just wish I had my camera here so I could take proper pictures.

He's been following Pip around outside. His little legs mean he can't keep up when Pip runs but he's trying *g*

Pip had a good day at training. He was laying down a lot though. I think he's feeling the heat. We'll get him clipped as soon as we find out the date the RSPCA rescue team is coming to film him.

This month we're working on focus training, step training (putting his feet up onto a stool and walking around it etc.) and shaping.
We need to bring a stool and focus stick next week so we'll have to get those.

Pippin is still only able to hold the stay for a short amount of time and he wont stay at all if he can't see us any more. We're working on that this week as well as getting a more reliable recall when he's off lead. He was pretty good for a while but he started playing up after the Hill End road trip.

I think we'll be heading to training on Tuesday with both dogs and possibly staying for the theory lesson as well.

If you go to our flickr photo stream you can see a couple more pictures from today, a video that was taken at the same time as this picture and a video of Dougall playing with his bone.

I think that's about all for now.
Both dogs are crashed out here now after a big day. Hopefully they'll get on really well together.

Well this will have to be quick as there's a storm a-brewing and I've no idea when it will hit.
We're all pretty much shielded electronically but if the power goes out we can't post obviously.
I'm painting right now so I'm saving VERY often. It wasn't such a problem on the laptop because I usually had 5-10 mins on that if the power died but I'm on a desktop right now.

This is the first real thunderstorm we've had since we got Pip. Wow, that was in April. It's been a quiet winter storm wise. We've had lots and lots of rain and many days with really high winds but not really any thunder. I know we mainly get those in the Summer but there's usually some in the winter.

He seems fine at the moment though. Angel used to whine and freak out and try to dig into the carpet. Especially as she got older. Mum's dog Kara used to freak out even worse. Actually I wouldn't be surprised if Angel got worse by being around Kara.

We went and bought Pip a new lead and collar. His old lead was getting worn and looked a mess, so we wanted something newer and preferable softer. So, we got a purple KraMar Braided Lead, plus a collar to match, because they were on special. Didn't pay much over $20 for both! Bargain! The collar fit Pip beautifully, and the lead is really nice and soft.

Ruth

The downside of today was that, like yesterday, the dog went hysterical when we tried to leave. As in, full on yowling, struggling, eyes rolling hysteria. Didn't do any damage to me, fortunately, but it's tiring, and really not what you want to be dealing with when you know you're in for a day of doctor's and benefits office appointments. Fail, Pip. I gave you a bone bigger than your head before I left. You have to learn how to be alone for a few hours, buddy. :(
